The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has assured Nigerians that the constitutional amendment bill will be passed without delay.

He gave the assurance on Monday during the National Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution, held in Abuja.

Abbas emphasized the chamber’s determination to deliver a successful amendment after past assemblies failed in their attempts. He praised Nigerians for actively participating in the process, noting that their voices would guide lawmakers’ decisions.

“As Speaker, I pledge that we will take your contributions seriously and consider the bills with diligence, fairness, and urgency,” he said. Abbas further promised transparent engagement with state assemblies and close collaboration with the executive to ensure smooth progress.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who chairs the House Committee on Constitutional Amendment, also pledged an all-inclusive process. Representing President Bola Tinubu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume lauded the committee’s efforts in involving citizens, political parties, civil society, and traditional leaders in the exercise. He reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

What you should know

The push for constitutional amendment has long been central to Nigeria’s democratic evolution, but previous attempts stalled. Speaker Abbas Tajudeen’s assurance signals renewed urgency, with support from President Tinubu’s administration.

If successful, the amendment could bring reforms affecting governance, institutions, and national development, shaping the country’s political future.
