Producer Mustard Files for Sole Custody, Claims Ex Violated Agreement on Social Media

Grammy Award-winning music producer Mustard, born Dijon McFarlane, has filed for sole legal custody of his three children, alleging that his ex-wife Chanel Thierry has violated their custody agreement by making disparaging remarks about him on social media.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the 33-year-old hitmaker behind chart-topping productions for artists like Kendrick Lamar, Megan Thee Stallion, and Travis Scott is asking a Los Angeles judge to strip Thierry of her legal custody rights over their children: Kiylan, 13, Kauner, 10, and Kody, 6.

The legal filing, prepared by prominent family law attorney Samantha Spector, claims Thierry breached a specific provision in their previous custody order that explicitly prohibited both parents from speaking “in a negative, disrespectful, or derogatory manner to or about the other” in their children’s presence or within their hearing distance.

Central to Mustard’s complaint is a series of social media posts allegedly made by Thierry on the platform Threads. In an October 26 post cited in the court documents, Thierry reportedly wrote, “Dijon, I know you are reading this; I’m so sick of your shit. You suck.” She allegedly followed up with another post stating, “I’ve been divorced 3 years now, and my ex-husband continues to do things to purposely get under my skin … A man will treat your child according to how he feels about the mother. Mark my words.”

The producer’s legal team argues these public statements “negatively impact the best interests” of their children and “undermine the proper functioning of the co-parenting process.” Mustard’s filing also notes that Thierry’s posts about him tend to generate significant online attention, potentially amplifying their impact.

In addition to seeking sole legal custody, Mustard is requesting that Thierry be ordered to pay $30,000 in sanctions as punishment for allegedly violating the court’s previous orders.

The former couple’s relationship timeline has been marked by both collaboration and conflict. They married in 2020, with their divorce being finalized earlier this year after proceedings that began following their 2022 separation. Under the terms of their divorce settlement, Thierry received a substantial one-time spousal support buyout payment of $315,000, while Mustard was ordered to pay $24,500 monthly in child support.

Despite the financial settlement, tensions between the exes appear to remain high, with this latest legal action representing an escalation in their post-divorce disputes.

Requests for comment sent to Chanel Thierry have not been returned as of press time. It remains unclear when a judge will rule on Mustard’s motion for sole legal custody and sanctions.

This case highlights the growing legal complexities surrounding social media use in custody disputes, as family courts increasingly grapple with how parents’ online behavior affects their children and co-parenting relationships in the digital age.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Music producer Mustard is seeking full custody of his three children, alleging his ex-wife Chanel Thierry violated their custody agreement by publicly criticizing him on social media. He claims her October posts on Threads—including “Dijon, I know you are reading this; I’m so sick of your shit”—breach a court order prohibiting either parent from speaking negatively about the other within earshot of their kids.

Mustard argues that these public statements harm the children and wants Thierry fined $30,000. The case underscores how social media activity can become evidence in custody battles, with courts now treating online posts as potential violations of co-parenting agreements.
