Senate President Godswill Akpabio has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his directive ordering the withdrawal of police operatives assigned to Very Important Persons across the country.

President Tinubu had, on November 23, directed that police officers attached to VIPs be withdrawn and redeployed to confront the nation’s growing security challenges. Under the directive, individuals who require security protection are expected to seek armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps instead of relying on the police.

Raising the issue during a joint sitting of the National Assembly on Friday, shortly after the presentation of the 2026 budget, Akpabio expressed concern over the safety of federal lawmakers following the implementation of the directive. The former Akwa Ibom State governor warned that the sudden withdrawal of security operatives had exposed members of the National Assembly to potential risks.

“Only one concern, Mr President. As we direct the security agencies to withdraw policemen from critical areas, some of the National Assembly members said I should let you know that they may not be able to go home today because they may be picked up.”

“On that note, we plead with Mr President for a review of the decision. May God bless you, may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria and may God bless our National Assembly,” Akpabio added.

Beyond the security concerns, the Senate President commended President Tinubu for the economic reforms introduced since he assumed office on May 29, 2023. He maintained that although the reforms have been difficult, they are beginning to yield positive results for the country.

According to him, Nigeria’s journey has never been without challenges, describing the nation’s history as one marked by resilience and determination. He assured the President of the legislature’s readiness to support his administration.

“Our national story has never been one of perfection. It has always been a story of perseverance, and the people are motivated passionately,” Akpabio said.

He further pledged the commitment of the National Assembly to work with the executive arm, noting that lawmakers share both the burdens and achievements of the Tinubu administration’s reform agenda.

What you should know

The withdrawal of police officers from VIP protection is part of President Tinubu’s effort to strengthen internal security by redeploying personnel to frontline duties.

However, the move has generated concern among lawmakers and other public office holders who fear increased exposure to security threats. Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s appeal highlights the tension between reallocating limited security resources and ensuring the safety of elected officials.

The request for a review suggests that adjustments or exemptions may be considered to balance national security priorities with the protection of key public institutions.
