Beşiktaş midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has been handed the captain’s armband of the Super Eagles, stepping into the leadership role for one of Africa’s most decorated national teams.

The appointment marks a new chapter for the Nigerian side as preparations intensify for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Confirming the decision, the national team announced on Friday: “Wilfred Ndidi has been named Captain of the Super Eagles and says the responsibility means everything as Nigeria heads to Morocco.” The statement underscores the confidence placed in the experienced midfielder to guide the team during a crucial phase.

Ndidi’s first major task as skipper will be to lead the three-time African champions in their quest for continental success at AFCON 2025. Fully aware of the expectations attached to the role, the midfielder has emphasised the importance of collective belief and unity as Nigeria sets its sights on lifting the trophy in North Africa.

“It’s a huge responsibility, and with the help of the players, I think everything will go smoothly,” Ndidi told the Super Eagles media team. He explained that he has already begun engaging senior members of the squad to reinforce a shared sense of purpose. “I’ve had a conversation with a couple of players, just some of the older players. You know, just try to make them understand the reason why we’re here. Also, you need the support from the staff. We’re all in this together,” he added.

Ndidi’s emergence as captain follows the exit of two established leaders from the national setup. Ahmed Musa, who had been the long-serving captain, has not featured for Nigeria in several months and was an unused substitute during the 2023 AFCON. William Troost-Ekong, who had served as stand-in captain, also brought his international career to an end.

Troost-Ekong’s retirement came as a shock to many supporters, particularly as he had been named in the Super Eagles’ preliminary squad for the 2025 AFCON. The defender, however, chose to step away from international football before the final list of players was unveiled.

Nigeria have been drawn into Group C of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where they will face Tanzania, Uganda, and Tunisia. The Super Eagles are scheduled to kick off their campaign on December 23, with Ndidi set to lead the side into the tournament with renewed ambition and focus.

What you should know

Wilfred Ndidi’s appointment as Super Eagles captain represents a generational shift in leadership following the retirement and absence of long-standing figures like Ahmed Musa and William Troost-Ekong.

Known for his discipline, experience in European football, and influence on and off the pitch, Ndidi is expected to provide stability as Nigeria targets AFCON success.

With a competitive group awaiting them in Morocco, the new captaincy places Ndidi at the centre of Nigeria’s push to reclaim continental glory.
