President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to approve the dismissal of the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for Abia, Adamawa, and Sokoto states. The affected officials are Ike Uzochukwu of Abia State, Hudu Yunusa-Ari of Adamawa, and Nura Ali of Sokoto, who were suspended due to alleged misconduct during the 2023 general elections.

The request was presented in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the plenary on Wednesday.

In the letter, Tinubu referenced Section 157, Subsection 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, and asked the Senate to consider and vote for the termination of the appointments of the three RECs. He reminded lawmakers that the suspension of the RECs had been in place since March 2022, prior to the current administration’s arrival.

The President urged the Senate to expedite the approval process, adding that he would soon nominate replacements for the vacant positions.
