The immediate past Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has praised President Bola Tinubu for signing into law the bill establishing the North Central Development Commission (NCDC).

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the signing of the bill during a Senate session on Tuesday. In a statement signed by his media aide, Terver Akase, and released in Makurdi on Thursday, Ortom described the development as a historic milestone in addressing the security and economic challenges facing the North Central region.

He highlighted that for over a decade, the region has suffered from attacks by armed herders, bandits, and other criminal elements, leading to the loss of countless lives and the displacement of millions. According to Ortom, the establishment of the NCDC demonstrates President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing the plight of the people.

“The North Central Development Commission will not just be a bureaucratic entity; it will represent hope for our communities that have suffered immeasurable losses due to unprovoked attacks. The people of North Central have long awaited this moment, and it is heartening to see that our aspirations have been recognized at the highest level of government,” the statement read.

Ortom also commended Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, for sponsoring the bill and acknowledged his dedication to the region’s development. He further congratulated Dr. Titus Zam, the Senator representing Benue North West, on his appointment as Chairman of the Senate Committee on the NCDC and wished him success in leading the commission’s establishment.

The former governor urged the people of the North Central region to support the commission’s efforts once it becomes fully operational.
