The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, has called on indigenes and residents of Edo State to observe a two-week fasting and prayer period aimed at warding off evil and ensuring peace in the land.

In a statement released on Monday by the Obamedo of Benin, Efosa Igbinomwanhia, the revered monarch announced that the fasting will run from September 15 to September 28, 2025. He urged all Benin sons and daughters, both at home and in the diaspora, as well as non-indigenes residing in Edo, to participate.

“This is in line with our age-long tradition that before the commencement of the yearly new yam, it is important that we fast and pray to God Almighty and the royal ancestors for bountiful harvest and to shield us away from sudden death and for peace and tranquillity in our individual homes, families, state and country at large,” the statement noted.

The fasting will take place daily from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Oba also prayed for God’s blessings of peace and happiness upon all participants.

What you should know

The Oba of Benin has directed Edo indigenes, residents, and the diaspora to join in a two-week fasting and prayer from September 15–28, 2025.

The spiritual exercise, tied to the annual new yam tradition, seeks divine protection, peace, and a fruitful harvest for the kingdom.
