The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) intensified its commitment to the country’s energy transition agenda on Monday, handing over 35 hybrid compressed natural gas buses to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas in a ceremony that underscored the government’s push toward cleaner transportation alternatives.

The donation, valued at millions of naira, represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to reduce dependence on traditional petroleum products while leveraging the country’s abundant natural gas reserves. The handover ceremony at NNPC Towers in Abuja brought together key stakeholders in Nigeria’s energy sector, signaling coordinated government and private sector efforts to transform the nation’s transportation landscape.

Group Chief Executive Officer Bashir Ojulari emphasized that the donation aligns with NNPC’s broader strategy to position compressed natural gas as a viable, cost-effective alternative to conventional fuels. Speaking to assembled officials and media, Ojulari highlighted the company’s progress in developing critical infrastructure, including gas supply chains, distribution networks, and retail expansion across multiple Nigerian cities.

The initiative received strong endorsement from Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo, who characterized the buses as instruments of economic empowerment extending beyond mere transportation. Ekpo directly linked the project to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to reducing transportation costs while maximizing Nigeria’s natural resource wealth for broader citizen benefit.

The economic implications of the transition received detailed attention during the ceremony. NNPC’s Executive Vice President for Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, outlined substantial cost savings anticipated from reduced reliance on premium motor spirit and automotive gas oil. The shift promises to stimulate domestic gas industry growth while offering consumers more affordable transportation options.

The company’s Executive Vice President for Gas, Power, and New Energy reinforced NNPC’s leadership role in commercializing compressed natural gas nationwide, noting growing momentum for alternative fuel adoption across various sectors. This positioning suggests the energy giant views CNG as central to Nigeria’s long-term energy strategy.

NNPC Foundation Managing Director Emmanuella Arukwe framed the donation within the company’s commitment to creating an inclusive, sustainable energy future for Nigeria. Her remarks highlighted the social responsibility dimensions of the initiative, extending beyond commercial considerations to encompass broader national development goals.

Program Coordinator and CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative Michael Oluwagbemi praised NNPC as a consistent partner since the program’s inception, describing the bus donation as a “major boost” toward achieving national CNG adoption targets. His comments suggest the initiative has maintained steady momentum despite typical challenges facing large-scale infrastructure projects.

The Presidential Initiative on CNG, launched as part of broader efforts to ease transportation burdens on Nigerian citizens, aims to promote environmental sustainability while maximizing the utilization of the country’s vast natural gas resources. The program represents a strategic approach to addressing multiple challenges simultaneously: reducing transportation costs, decreasing environmental impact, and creating economic opportunities within the domestic energy sector.

The 35 donated buses will serve as pilot models within public transportation systems across key Nigerian cities, providing practical testing grounds for wider CNG adoption. This approach allows authorities to evaluate performance, identify optimization opportunities, and address potential challenges before broader implementation.

The initiative comes amid growing global emphasis on cleaner energy alternatives and Nigeria’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions. By leveraging domestic natural gas resources, the program positions Nigeria to achieve environmental goals while maintaining energy security and economic benefits for citizens.

The successful handover ceremony represents a convergence of government policy, private sector investment, and technological innovation aimed at transforming Nigeria’s transportation sector while supporting broader economic development objectives.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Nigeria’s state oil company, NNPC, has donated 35 compressed natural gas buses to the government’s clean energy initiative, marking a significant step in the country’s shift away from expensive petrol toward cheaper, cleaner domestic natural gas for transportation.

This move directly supports President Tinubu’s agenda to reduce transportation costs for ordinary Nigerians while utilizing the nation’s abundant gas reserves, with the buses serving as pilot models before wider rollout across major cities.

The donation represents both immediate relief for transportation costs and a long-term strategy to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuel while creating jobs in the domestic gas industry.
