Anthony Elanga is poised to become Newcastle United’s first marquee signing of the transfer window, with multiple reputable sources reporting on Tuesday that a £55 million ($75 million) agreement has been reached between the Magpies and Nottingham Forest for the Swedish international.

According to The Athletic, BBC, and Sky Sports, Elanga is expected to make the move to St James’ Park soon, following a breakout season with Forest in which he scored six goals and contributed 11 assists. The 22-year-old played a key role in Forest’s unexpected seventh-place finish in the Premier League, helping the club secure a place in European competition.

Elanga’s rise has been particularly remarkable considering Nottingham Forest signed him for just £15 million from Manchester United two years ago. His pace, creativity, and consistent performances have made him one of the league’s standout young talents, and his move to Newcastle marks a major step in his career.

For Newcastle, the acquisition signals intent ahead of their return to Champions League football next season. Despite significant financial backing from the Saudi sovereign wealth fund and a League Cup title to their name, the club has had to navigate spending restrictions imposed by financial sustainability regulations.

Those rules have so far tempered their activity in the transfer market, making the Elanga deal a much-needed boost.

The signing is expected to give manager Eddie Howe greater attacking depth, and Elanga’s versatility across the forward line makes him a valuable addition to the squad.
