The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has refuted reports alleging that the Federal Government directed it to suspend enforcement actions against sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle alcoholic products, describing the claim as inaccurate.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Agency clarified that it has not received any official instruction from the Federal Government to stop its regulatory measures concerning sachet alcohol.

“The said publication is false, misleading, and does not reflect any official communication received by the Agency from the Federal Government,” NAFDAC stated.

The Agency explained that it continues to function strictly within its legal responsibilities and in accordance with properly communicated government policies and directives. It emphasised that its enforcement activities are anchored on established laws and regulatory guidelines.

“At no time has the Agency received any formal directive ordering the suspension of its regulatory or enforcement activities in respect of sachet alcohol products,” Adeyeye stated.

NAFDAC reaffirmed its dedication to protecting public health and maintaining compliance in the food and beverage industry. It noted that any policy decision affecting nationwide regulatory actions would be announced through official government communication channels.

The Agency also cautioned against circulating unverified information, warning that such reports could trigger unnecessary public concern, economic instability, and confusion regarding government policies.

“NAFDAC therefore urges members of the public, industry stakeholders, and the media to disregard the false report and to rely only on verified information issued through the Agency’s official platforms and authorised government communication channels,” Adeyeye said.

The clarification follows ongoing regulatory focus on sachet alcohol products, which have generated public health concerns, particularly regarding their accessibility and potential misuse among young people.

Reaffirming its stance, NAFDAC stated that it remains committed to advancing public health, economic stability, and the overall national interest.

What you should know

NAFDAC has denied reports that the Federal Government instructed it to suspend enforcement against sachet alcohol and small PET bottle alcoholic drinks.

The Agency insists no such directive was received and says its regulatory actions remain guided by existing laws. The issue of sachet alcohol has sparked public health debates, especially over youth access and misuse.

NAFDAC has urged the public and media to ignore unverified reports and rely only on official communications for accurate information.
