Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died alongside his brother, Andre, in a fatal car crash that occurred early Thursday morning in northwestern Spain.

The accident happened in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora province, when the vehicle they were traveling in veered off the motorway and caught fire. Spanish authorities confirmed that both men perished at the scene.

According to a statement from the Civil Guard, preliminary investigations suggest that a tyre blowout occurred while the vehicle was overtaking, leading to the devastating crash. The car was quickly engulfed in flames, leaving no chance for survival.

The tragedy comes just days after Jota celebrated a significant personal milestone. On June 22, the 28-year-old married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, sharing joyful wedding moments with fans via Instagram. The couple had three children together.

The news of Jota’s death sent shockwaves through the football world. Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca expressed deep sorrow on social media, describing Jota as “an extraordinary person, respected by all his colleagues and opponents, someone blessed with an infectious joy and a reference for his own community.”

Proenca confirmed that the federation requested a minute’s silence ahead of Portugal’s Women’s Euro 2025 qualifier against Spain in Switzerland on Thursday in honour of both brothers.

“We have lost two champions,” Proenca wrote. “The death of Diogo and Andre Silva are irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything possible to honour their legacy every day.”

Jota’s football career had seen him rise through the ranks from his early days at Paços de Ferreira to high-profile stints with Atlético Madrid and FC Porto before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League. His success at Wolves earned him a move to Liverpool, where he became a fan favourite for his skill, speed, and work ethic.

Last season, he contributed nine goals across all competitions, playing a key role in Liverpool’s triumphant campaign as they secured their historic 20th Premier League title.

Tributes from around the world poured in, with fans, clubs, and teammates mourning the loss of a player known not just for his talent but for his humility and kindness off the pitch. Jota’s sudden passing has left a gaping void in the hearts of football supporters and his community alike.

As investigations into the crash continue, the footballing world is left reeling from a loss that feels both personal and profound. The memory of Diogo Jota’s contributions to club and country will endure, not just in statistics, but in the spirit of the game he played with so much passion.
