Lagos Government Shuts Remi Tinubu Warehouse, Others
The Lagos State Government has shut down two warehouses known as Oluremi Tinubu and Anambra warehouses at Ijesha Bus Stop over alleged repeated illegal dumping of refuse on a road median.
The action was taken after authorities said the facilities failed to stop violating environmental sanitation laws despite previous warnings.
The enforcement was announced by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Muyiwa Gbadegesin.
He said the operation was carried out by the agency’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team together with the Lagos Environmental Sanction Corps and officers of the Nigeria Police.
According to LAWMA, the warehouses were sealed because of continued improper disposal of waste, which authorities said affected the environment and public infrastructure.
The agency explained that the enforcement formed part of the state government’s ongoing effort to improve cleanliness and ensure that businesses obey environmental regulations.
Gbadegesin said the government would continue taking action against individuals, companies and organisations that fail to follow waste management rules.
He added that protecting the environment and keeping public spaces clean remain key responsibilities of the state.
He also stated that the affected warehouses would remain closed until they meet all the conditions set by the relevant government agencies.
The authorities will only allow the premises to reopen after they are satisfied that every environmental compliance requirement has been fulfilled.
The LAWMA boss called on residents, business owners and institutions across Lagos to dispose of waste properly and follow approved waste management practices.
He warned that environmental laws would continue to be enforced across the state without exceptions.
