Lagos Government announces resumption date for schools
The Lagos State Government has released the approved harmonised academic calendar for the 2026/2027 session, setting out resumption dates, holidays, examination periods and other activities for all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state.
According to the approved schedule, schools will resume for the first term on Monday, September 14, 2026, after a Staff Professional Development programme scheduled to hold between September 7 and September 11.
Schools have been allowed to choose any two days within that period for the training.
The first half of the term will run from September 14 to October 30, while open day activities will take place on October 29 for primary schools and October 30 for secondary schools.
A mid-term break has been fixed for November 2 to November 6 before academic activities continue from November 9 to December 18.
Students will begin the first term vacation on December 21, 2026, and return to school on January 11, 2027.
The first term will have a total of 64 school days.
The second term will run from January 11 to April 16, 2027.
Open day has been scheduled for February 18 in primary schools and February 19 in secondary schools.
The mid-term break will take place between February 22 and February 26, while the vacation will begin on April 19 and end on April 30.
The second term will have 61 school days.
For the third term, schools will resume on May 3, 2027. The first half will end on June 11, followed by a one-week mid-term break from June 14 to June 18.
Academic activities will continue from June 21 until the end of the session on July 30, 2027.
The third term vacation will begin on August 2, 2027, after a total of 57 school days.
The calendar also lists public holidays expected during the school year, including Nigeria’s Independence Day, World Teachers’ Day observance, Eid-el-Fitr, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Workers’ Day, Eid-el-Kabir, Children’s Day and Democracy Day.
The government noted that observance of public holidays will depend on official announcements by the Federal Government.
The state government made it compulsory for schools to observe open day, although each school may decide the timing of the event.
Schools operating international curricula that wish to follow a different academic timetable have been directed to apply under the approved flexibility guidelines.
Applications must be submitted on or before Friday, August 21, 2026.
The government also listed International Literacy Day on September 8, 2026, and the International Day of Education on January 24, 2027, among the important dates for schools during the session.
