The Independent National Electoral Commission in Akwa Ibom State has confirmed that a total of 76,534 eligible voters were successfully enrolled during the first phase of its Continuous Voter Registration exercise, which officially ended on December 10, 2025.

The disclosure was made in Uyo by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Obo Effanga, through a statement released on Saturday by the Head of the Department of Voter Education and Publicity, Bukola Ojeme.

According to the statement, the REC noted: “During the first phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise between August 25 and December 10, we in INEC Akwa Ibom registered 76,534 in the state.”

Effanga explained that following the conclusion of the initial registration phase, the commission would open a verification window for citizens to scrutinise the provisional voters’ register. He stated, “From December 15-21, we shall display the preliminary list of registered voters to allow for claims and objections.”

FCT Area Council Elections

He encouraged newly registered voters to utilise the display period to visit any of the 31 INEC local government area offices across the state to confirm the accuracy of their personal information. He stressed that the exercise was crucial, as it would also allow members of the public to raise objections and report entries that ought not to appear on the register, including names of foreigners or deceased persons.

The REC further disclosed that the voter registration exercise would resume early next year, announcing that the next phase would begin soon. “The second phase of the registration will start on January 5, 2026,” he said.

Effanga also used the occasion to extend goodwill to residents of the state, wishing the people of Akwa Ibom a season filled with peace and blessings as they approach the Christmas celebrations.

What you should know

The Continuous Voter Registration exercise is INEC’s mechanism for ensuring that eligible Nigerians are captured in the national voters’ register ahead of elections.

The display of the preliminary register is a critical transparency step that allows citizens to verify their details and help clean the register by identifying errors, duplicates, or ineligible names.

The second phase of the CVR will provide another opportunity for those who missed the first phase to register, update their information, or replace lost voter cards, strengthening electoral participation in Akwa Ibom State.
