Erling Haaland etched his name further into football history by becoming the fastest player to score 50 goals in the UEFA Champions League, reaching the milestone in just 49 appearances as Manchester City secured a 2-0 victory over Napoli on Thursday.
The Norwegian striker opened the scoring in the second half, before Jeremy Doku sealed the win with a dazzling solo effort. City’s triumph was aided by an early red card for Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo, who was sent off after bringing down Haaland in the 21st minute.

The dismissal forced Napoli into defensive reshuffling, with Antonio Conte sacrificing Kevin De Bruyne, who was making his much-anticipated return to the Etihad just months after leaving the club. The Belgian received a hero’s welcome, with fans displaying banners in his honour, but his evening ended after only 26 minutes.
Despite being a man down, Napoli battled bravely, with goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic producing outstanding saves to deny Rodri, Nico O’Riley, and Josko Gvardiol. Matteo Politano also cleared Tijjani Reijnders’ effort off the line before halftime.

City eventually broke through when Phil Foden flicked the ball into Haaland’s path, allowing him to loop a header beyond Milinkovic-Savic. Doku later added the second with a brilliant run through Napoli’s defence, calmly finishing past the goalkeeper.
The win continues City’s momentum after their weekend derby victory over Manchester United, a timely boost following a shaky Premier League start. With Arsenal up next, Pep Guardiola’s side look to be regaining their rhythm, while Napoli will consider this their toughest test of the group stage.
