The Paramount Ruler of Bangha Kingdom in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, Suanu Baridam, narrowly escaped death on Sunday evening after gunmen attacked his convoy and opened fire.

The first-class traditional ruler was returning from an official engagement in the Okwale community within Khana when the incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. The attack happened along Tekar Sogho Road, a key route that links the area to the East–West Road.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants lay in wait between Taabaa Junction and Sogho, where they attempted to stop the monarch’s vehicle. When the driver refused to comply, the gunmen reportedly began shooting at the convoy.

During the attack, the monarch sustained a gunshot injury to his leg, while his driver was also wounded. Both were immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment, with the traditional ruler said to be receiving medical care.

Police Launch Probe

Confirming the incident on Monday, the Rivers State Police Command said unidentified gunmen emerged from the bush and attacked the monarch’s black Prado Jeep, damaging the windscreen and other parts of the vehicle.

The police identified the victim as King T. Y. Baridam, the Paramount Ruler of Bangha Community, and confirmed that he suffered a gunshot wound to his thigh.

While the motive behind the attack has yet to be established, sources indicated that the assailants may have intended to assassinate the monarch.

This marks the second time King Baridam has survived an assassination attempt.

According to the police, patrol teams were swiftly deployed to the area to comb the surroundings and pursue the attackers.

“The Rivers State Police Command has commenced investigation into the incident and will leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice,” the statement said.

The command also urged residents to remain calm and assist security agencies by providing credible information that could aid ongoing investigations.

The attack has further raised concerns about the safety of traditional rulers and the growing incidence of violent attacks in parts of Rivers State.

What you should know
Rivers State has in recent years witnessed rising security challenges, including attacks on community leaders and traditional rulers.

Such incidents often heighten tension in rural areas, where monarchs play a key role in maintaining peace and mediating local disputes. The attempted assassination of the Bangha Kingdom ruler underscores broader concerns about armed violence, weak security presence in some communities, and the vulnerability of prominent figures.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, but residents and civil society groups continue to call for stronger protection for traditional institutions and more decisive action against armed groups.
