The global music industry is in mourning the tragic and violent death of Talay Riley, the Grammy Award-winning Nigerian-British singer and songwriter whose extraordinary pen helped shape the soundtracks of a generation.

Riley, born Mark Yinka Orabiyi, was a Grammy-winning, multi-platinum-selling songwriter known for collaborating with several international music stars. He was just 35 years old.

Metropolitan Police officers were called to reports of a stabbing around 9 a.m. on Pankhurst Avenue in Silvertown, East London, on June 5, where they discovered a 35-year-old man suffering from multiple stab wounds in the garden of a nearby property on Rayleigh Road.

Despite the desperate efforts of paramedics who rushed to the scene, there was nothing that could be done. Riley was pronounced dead where he fell.

The attack was not without additional casualties. Another man was also found with multiple stab wounds and was rushed to hospital. His condition has since been reported as non-life-threatening.

Law enforcement moved swiftly in the wake of the killing. Three people were arrested on suspicion of murder, including two men aged 27 and 24 and a 25-year-old woman.

The 27-year-old man was later released on bail pending further investigation, while the remaining two suspects were released with no further action.

Homicide detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command have since taken over the investigation, and a formal murder inquiry is now underway.

The magnitude of this loss cannot be overstated. Among Riley’s notable works was “Lights On” by H.E.R., a song he co-wrote for the singer’s Grammy-winning self-titled project. He also contributed to hit songs including “Young Dumb & Broke” by Khalid and worked with artists such as Dua Lipa, Usher, and Craig David.

Riley signed his first major publishing deal with Global Publishing at the age of 18, and went on to write rapper Chip’s number-one UK single “Oopsy Daisy.” It was the beginning of a career that would see him become one of the most quietly influential figures in modern pop and R&B.

Born Mark Olabanji A. Olayinka Orabiyi in London in 1990, Riley grew up in East London in a family where music played a central role. Influenced by artists including Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Usher and Beyoncé, he began performing at a young age and quickly established himself as a formidable creative force.

In a statement confirming his death, Riley’s family expressed deep sorrow over the loss: “It is with overwhelming sadness that we confirm that Mark ‘Yinka’ Orabiyi, professionally known as Talay Riley, passed away yesterday morning. Talay will fondly be remembered by those who knew him publicly for his incredible talent as a Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum-selling songwriter and artist.

The most personal tribute came from Riley’s younger brother, Grammy-winning producer Scribz Riley, who revealed the pair had spoken about the future shortly before Talay went to sleep, just hours before the fatal attack.

The outpouring of grief from fellow artists was swift and heartfelt. Rapper Chip wrote on Instagram: “Fly high bro. Your pen will live forever. What a day man. What a life… RIP Talay Riley.”

The killing has once again cast a long shadow over the persistent problem of knife crime in London.

On social media, one user captured the sentiment of many: “Another senseless killing of a young, British male. Such a talent gone at such a young age. Rest in paradise, Talay.”

As the Metropolitan Police continue to piece together the events of that Friday morning in Silvertown, the music world is left to reckon with the sudden, devastating silence of a voice that had so much more left to say.
