Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the National Chairman of Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has stepped down from his position, sources at the party’s national headquarters confirmed on Friday.
The development, which has yet to be officially announced by the party’s leadership, marks a significant shift in the APC’s national structure ahead of its scheduled national convention in December 2025.
While the reasons behind Ganduje’s resignation remain unclear, reliable insiders revealed that the former Kano State governor has vacated his office, with most of his personal belongings already removed from the APC national secretariat in Abuja.
A source within the party, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter, disclosed: “Yes, Ganduje has resigned, and most of his personal belongings have been moved from the APC national secretariat. The National Working Committee (NWC) will soon confirm this and announce an acting replacement.”
As of press time on Friday, the APC had yet to issue an official statement regarding the resignation. However, party activity at the national headquarters indicated a high level of anticipation, with clusters of supporters gathering to discuss the unfolding situation and await formal confirmation.
Efforts to reach the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, for comment proved unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls placed by reporters.
Meanwhile, the development was amplified on social media by Bashir Ahmad, a former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari. Taking to his X handle, Ahmad wrote: “The National Chairman of our great party, the All Progressives Congress(APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has resigned from his position, effective immediately, as confirmed by multiple sources. The former National Chairman of our party would be succeeded in acting capacity by one of the party’s national vice chairmen until a substantive chairman is elected at the national convention scheduled for December 2025.”
The abrupt resignation has sparked speculation across political circles, with analysts noting the strategic timing just months ahead of the APC’s national convention. It also raises questions about the party’s internal dynamics and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Ganduje, who took over the APC national chairmanship following the resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu in 2023, had served less than two years in the role. During his tenure, the party managed transitions at various levels of government and faced growing scrutiny over internal cohesion and performance.
Observers will be watching closely as the APC’s National Working Committee moves to announce an acting chairman, a step that could indicate the party’s next direction and approach to leadership going into the next election cycle.
