The 2024 Labour Party governorship candidate in Edo State, Olumide Akpata, has formally defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Akpata was received into the party during an event held in Benin City. The ceremony was attended by Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate; John Odigie-Oyegun, former governor of Edo State; Oserhiemen Osunbor, also a former Edo governor; Roland Owie; and other party leaders.

Speaking after receiving his ADC membership card, Akpata said Nigeria’s transformation would depend on citizens making the right electoral choices.

He explained that his defection, alongside his running mate in the 2024 governorship election, Yusuf Asama Kadiri (SAN), and members of the Obidient Movement in Edo State, was aimed at strengthening the ADC.

According to him, members of the Labour Party structure in the state were represented at the event to demonstrate their commitment to adding value to the ADC.

Akpata expressed appreciation to the party leadership and specifically thanked Peter Obi for his support, as well as Chief Odigie-Oyegun for formally receiving them into the party.

In his remarks, Odigie-Oyegun said the ADC continues to expand both in numbers and in the calibre of individuals joining its ranks.

He described Akpata as one of the country’s distinguished sons and noted that his decision to join the party reflected a growing desire among Nigerians to contribute to national renewal.

Earlier, the Edo State chairman of the ADC, Kennedy Odion, described Akpata as a leader who understands the direction the country should take and how to address its economic challenges.

Peter Obi, in his address, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to building a new Nigeria. He urged supporters to remain steadfast despite political obstacles, stressing the need to create a country that works for all citizens and prioritises production over consumption.

He encouraged members to remain resolute in their pursuit of national transformation, adding that securing a better future for the next generation would require dedication and persistence.
