Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has now been officially documented as a member of the All Progressives Congress after he was issued his party membership card during a brief ceremony held at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

The card was handed to him by the Rivers State APC Chairman, Tony Okocha, who stood in for the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda.

Fubara Receives APC Membership Card

During the presentation, Governor Fubara explained that his decision to move to the APC was driven by a desire to deepen unity and enhance development across Rivers State.

According to him, aligning with the party currently steering the federal government had become essential to secure political calm and ensure that governance in the state continues without disruptions. He stressed that his support for President Bola Tinubu is not only a matter of political cooperation but also an expression of gratitude for what he described as the President’s role in helping the state government remain stable during its most turbulent periods.

Fubara stated that with Rivers State now linked politically with the federal government, the collective goal of strengthening the APC and preparing the ground for a seamless political progression toward 2027 is more attainable.

He reassured the party’s leaders that Rivers State, under his leadership, would maintain its footing as a reliable base for the APC. He added that he would personally ensure the party’s executives are supported and that the party’s operations across the state remain active and strengthened.

The governor also extended appreciation to political leaders and supporters who had remained steadfast during recent political upheavals, urging them to intensify their efforts as the state transitions into what he termed a fresh period of political consolidation and accelerated development.

In his message delivered through Okocha, the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, congratulated the governor on what he described as a courageous and well-considered choice.

Fubara Defection To APC

Yilwatda said Fubara’s reasons for defecting reflected patriotism and a genuine desire to safeguard the state’s interests. He added that Fubara’s entry into the ruling party marks a new era of unity among political actors in Rivers, who are now rallying under one political umbrella.

The ceremony drew several prominent party figures, including the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN). Keyamo was also in the state for the commissioning of the Ikwerre Road–Igwiruta–Airport Road project and the flag-off of construction for a bypass intended to connect communities around the Port Harcourt International Airport.

What You Should Know

Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s formal registration into the APC marks a major realignment in Rivers State politics, positioning the state government directly in sync with the federal administration.

His defection comes on the heels of prolonged political tension and signals a strategic attempt to stabilize governance, secure federal backing, and unify political blocs within the state. The APC leadership views his move as a decisive step toward consolidating influence in Rivers, a state long dominated by rival political interests.

With key national figures present at the ceremony, the development underscores the ruling party’s focus on expanding its foothold ahead of the 2027 political cycle.
