Fiancé Says Late Actress Tope Osoba Died in Police Custody

The death of Yoruba Nollywood star Temitope “Tope” Osoba has taken a fresh and troubling turn, after her fiancé, Prophet Itunu Onadeko, alleged that the actress died inside a police station in Ikorodu, Lagos State, a claim that directly contradicts weeks of public speculation linking her passing to complications from breast cancer.

Onadeko, the Shepherd-in-Charge of CCC Onibuore Cathedral in Bogije, Ibeju-Lekki, made the disclosure during a sit-down interview with the Celestial Reality Check, the media investigative arm of the Celestial Church of Christ, broadcast on Saturday.

In a wide-ranging account that raised as many questions as it answered, the cleric pushed back against several competing narratives that have circulated since Osoba’s death,  including claims of poisoning, maltreatment and financial exploitation while offering his own version of her final hours.

According to Onadeko, news of Osoba’s death did not come from hospital staff, police, or even a family member, but from a stranger.

He said he was informed of Osoba’s death by an unidentified person who called him around midnight, telling him only that she had died at a police station in the Ikorodu area.

Curiously, Onadeko admitted he still does not know which station the actress allegedly died in.

He said he was unable to identify the particular police station where Osoba allegedly died but reported himself at a nearby station after receiving the information, an act that itself raises questions about what exactly transpired that night, and why a report needed to be filed at all if, as he insists, no wrongdoing occurred.

Piecing together Osoba’s last known movements, Onadeko said the actress had set out to see two people shortly before her death: himself, and a woman he identified only as Mrs Kehinde Osoba, whom he described as a fellow church operator.

He said church commitments kept him from joining the trip, and that Osoba proceeded with her hairdresser instead, with whom she was reportedly staying at the time.

The two stayed in touch as the visit unfolded, and Osoba even shared a social media update the now-poignant phrase “Ogo Tuntun,” meaning “A New Glory” days before her death, according to other reports on her final days.

Onadeko also disputed suggestions that Osoba had been restricted from driving, insisting she drove herself to Iperu shortly before her death.

Beyond the circumstances of her death, Onadeko used the interview to fend off a cluster of damaging allegations that have followed him since Osoba’s passing became public.

On claims that Osoba was mistreated in his household including allegations that she was subjected to degrading treatment over an accusation of theft he denied that Osoba suffered maltreatment while living with him or his family, maintaining that the couple had simply shared financial responsibilities during their relationship.

He further disclosed a more personal detail, saying the actress struggled with smoking and that he had encouraged her to quit the habit, and added, notably, that she had left the church about three weeks before her death, a detail that has not been fully explained.

He also revealed that he attempted to reach Osoba’s family after learning of her death, saying he contacted one of her uncles, identified as Taiwo, but was told the family did not want to speak with him.

On the matter of money, Onadeko was equally emphatic. Facing rumours that he had controlled or diverted funds raised for Osoba’s cancer treatment some pegged at ₦30 million toward the construction of his church, he insisted the donations went directly to Osoba’s own account, not his.

He noted that among those who contributed was businessman Mike Adenuga, who reportedly offered the actress a cheque, and stressed that his church building predated his relationship with Osoba by roughly two decades.

Osoba died on the evening of Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at the age of 40, with news of her passing breaking the following morning through an emotional Instagram tribute from fellow actor Alesh Ola Sanni.

She is set to be laid to rest on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at Iperu Remo, Ogun State.

Her death struck a particular chord in the Nigerian film community because of the very public battle with breast cancer she had waged in the years prior,  a fight that included a public appeal for financial assistance to undergo a second surgery in November 2024, and a return to acting she had once described as part of her healing journey.

It is precisely that history that makes Onadeko’s insistence that cancer played no role in her death so jarring to many following the story.

As of now, none of Onadeko’s claims , not the police station, not the midnight phone call, not his account of her final movements,  have been independently verified.

The exact circumstances and cause of Osoba’s death had not been established as of the time of this report, leaving Lagos State Police, and the actress’s grieving family, facing mounting pressure to clarify what actually happened to Temitope Osoba in her final hours.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The core takeaway here is that this story remains an unverified, single-source allegation.

Everything the public knows about Tope Osoba’s final hours, the police station, the midnight call, the denial of cancer as cause of death, comes solely from her fiancé, Prophet Onadeko, a man who is himself facing serious financial and maltreatment accusations tied to her death.

Until police or her family independently confirm or refute his account, it should be treated as one man’s version of events, not established fact.
