The Federal Government has thrown its weight behind the Super Eagles as they prepare for a crucial semi-final showdown against host nation Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, urging the players to give everything on the pitch in pursuit of victory.

“As you prepare to face Morocco in the AFCON semi finals, I want you to know that the whole of Nigeria stands firmly with you,” the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, said in a statement released on Wednesday afternoon.

The National Economic Council (NEC)

He praised the team’s performance so far, noting that their journey through the competition has reignited national pride and confidence. “Your journey so far has been inspiring. Match after match, you have shown discipline, courage, and belief, reminding us why the Super Eagles remain one of Africa’s most respected teams.”

Nigeria face Morocco with the ambition of reaching the AFCON final for the second consecutive time, following their defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in the 2023 final. The Super Eagles booked their place in the semi-finals after a commanding 2–0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-final, a performance that further strengthened their status as serious contenders for the title.

Describing Nigeria’s campaign as historic, Mohammed told the players that their success was built on more than talent alone. “They came from teamwork, confidence, and a fighting spirit. You have shown that same spirit in this tournament,” he wrote in an open letter addressed to the three-time African champions.

As the Eric Chelle-led side prepares to confront the Atlas Lions, the minister reminded the players that the nation stands solidly behind them. “You carry the hopes of millions of Nigerians. They believe in you and draw strength from your performances. Play with the confidence of champions, the unity of brothers, and hunger. Know your history and your worth.”

He urged the team to remain focused and committed throughout the encounter. “Stay focused, trust one another, and give your best from the first whistle to the last. Win every ball and fight for every chance. Never doubt what you can achieve together. You have earned your place at this stage. You possess the qualities to take it even further. Tonight, go out there and write another proud chapter in our football story. Play with heart. Play with pride. Play for Nigeria.”

Nigeria head into the encounter on the back of an impressive winning run, having scored 14 goals so far, the highest tally by any team in the tournament. However, facing the hosts presents their sternest challenge yet, with the Super Eagles expected to rely heavily on the attacking threat of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman to overcome the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists.

What you should know

Nigeria’s clash with Morocco represents one of the most significant tests of the Super Eagles’ AFCON campaign, as they aim to reclaim continental glory.

Morocco, as hosts, enjoy strong home support and have been one of Africa’s most consistent sides in recent years. Nigeria’s attacking form, defensive organisation and tournament experience will be key factors in determining the outcome.

A victory would not only secure a place in the final but also reinforce Nigeria’s reputation as a dominant force in African football.
