Summary

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued an official summons to former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, requesting his appearance for an interview as part of an ongoing investigation.

According to a letter dated November 24 and signed by Sunday Atiba Ofen-Imu on behalf of the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, the former AGF is expected to appear before the commission on Friday, November 28.

“The Commission is investigating a case which the need to obtain certain information from you becomes imperative,” the letter stated, noting that the meeting will take place at the EFCC Headquarters Institution and Research District in Jabi, Abuja.

The invitation further directed Malami to “kindly attend an interview with the undersigned through the Head, Special Duty Committee-3,” emphasising that the request was issued pursuant to Section 38(1) and (2) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2024.

While the EFCC did not disclose the specific reason for inviting the former AGF, the letter concluded by stressing that “Your cooperation in this regard is highly solicited, please.”

‘Malami Responds’

Abubakar Malami has confirmed receiving the EFCC’s letter and assured the public that he will honour the invitation.

In a statement shared with Channels Television on Friday, the former minister reaffirmed his willingness to engage with investigators, describing himself as a law-abiding citizen dedicated to transparency in governance.

“This is to confirm that I have been invited by the EFCC. As a law-abiding and patriotic citizen, I hereby reaffirm my commitment to honour the invitation,” he said.

Malami maintained that accountability has remained a guiding principle throughout his public service career, adding that he is committed to keeping Nigerians informed as events progress.

“I understand the spirit of accountability and transparency in public service, the principles that I both advocate and champion. Rooted in public service and in the spirit of transparency and accountability, I am committed to sharing with the Nigerian public the developments as they unfold,” he added.

Abubakar Malami served as Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Abubakar Malami’s invitation by the EFCC marks a significant development, given his central role in the justice sector during the Buhari administration.

Although the EFCC has not disclosed the specific case involved, Malami’s swift acknowledgment of the summons and his stated commitment to transparency signal his readiness to cooperate.

The interview scheduled for November 28 could shed more light on the matter as public interest continues to build.
