Education Minister Clarifies Nigeria’s Proposed School System Reform

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Maruf Alausa, has addressed misconceptions regarding proposed changes to Nigeria’s education system. Contrary to reports suggesting the federal government has scrapped the Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) structure, Alausa clarified that no immediate policy change has been implemented.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, he explained that discussions at the 2025 Extraordinary National Council on Education (NCE) meeting focused on a proposal for a 12-year uninterrupted education system. However, the 6-3-3-4 structure remains in place for now.

The proposed reform seeks to make 12 years of education compulsory while eliminating external assessments between JSS and SSS to allow seamless student progression. Alausa highlighted that similar models exist in the UK, Brazil, and Ghana.

He assured that the proposal is still under review, with an extensive eight-month consultation process involving education policymakers, state governments, teachers, and parents. A final decision is expected at the National Council on Education meeting in October 2025.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving access to quality education while ensuring alignment with global best practices.
