Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has voiced strong opposition to the recent proposal by the House of Representatives Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution to create 31 additional states in Nigeria.
During a plenary session on Thursday, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu read a letter from the committee detailing the proposed states.
Reacting via his X handle on Friday, Sani described the proposal as both ironic and comical. He questioned the necessity of creating new states when many of the existing ones struggle financially and rely on federal allocations for survival.
According to the former senator, the move appears to be a strategy by politicians to carve out personal territories rather than addressing Nigeria’s governance and economic challenges.
