Despite the withdrawal of a defamation case by Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi remains entangled in legal battles, facing four separate lawsuits filed by members of Babalola’s law firm across different states. Speaking on The Toyin Falola Interviews on Sunday, February 16, 2025, Farotimi disclosed that while the criminal charges had been dropped, civil cases against him persist.

The legal dispute began when Babalola petitioned the Ekiti State Police Commissioner, alleging defamation in Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. This led to the activist’s arrest and arraignment in two Ekiti courts. However, following interventions from top traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Babalola withdrew the criminal charges.

Despite this resolution, Farotimi revealed that his legal troubles are far from over, as four additional lawsuits have been filed against him by members of the Afe Babalola law office. He explained that the ongoing cases prevent him from discussing certain aspects of the situation.

Defending the credibility of his book, Farotimi dismissed claims that it contains baseless accusations, emphasizing that it is a well-researched work documenting his experiences within Nigeria’s judicial system. He rejected the notion that his book was based on idle speculation, asserting that its contents should be judged on their accuracy.

He argued that the real issue at stake is not his reputation but the integrity of Nigeria’s legal system. He maintained that his work was not intended as a personal attack but as an effort to highlight flaws in the judiciary and advocate for justice.
