Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has called on the U.S. government to adhere to established protocols when deporting immigrants from its territory. Her appeal came after a visit by the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr., to the ministry.

In a statement issued by her special assistant, Magnus Eze, Odumegwu-Ojukwu raised concerns about the possible suspension of the U.S. Drop Box Visa System and the emotional and financial distress faced by Nigerians due to impending deportations. She disclosed that 201 Nigerians are currently in U.S. immigration camps, with 85 already cleared for deportation.

Emphasizing the need for a dignified deportation process, she questioned whether affected individuals would be allowed to manage their assets before being repatriated. She also highlighted the economic impact on families in Nigeria who rely on remittances from their relatives abroad.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu urged the U.S. to reconsider suspending the Drop Box Visa Policy to prevent undue hardships for legitimate travellers. Additionally, she sought official clarification on the status of the policy and reassurances for the over 14,000 Nigerian students studying in the U.S.

On concerns about USAID, she acknowledged uncertainties but stressed the importance of its programmes in addressing humanitarian challenges. She also commended post-COVID-19 trade relations between both nations and encouraged investment in Nigeria’s mining sector.

In response, Ambassador Mills clarified that the Drop Box Visa Policy had not been suspended but was under review. He reassured that USAID remains committed to its initiatives, though some NGOs have reported difficulties. Addressing deportations, he confirmed that repatriated Nigerians would be returned to Lagos, with no alternatives considered.

He stated that the first group of deportees would include convicted criminals and individuals who violated immigration laws. Mills reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to strengthening trade relations with Nigeria, with a greater focus on commerce and economic cooperation.
