Afrobeats superstar Davido has broken his silence on allegations that he owes approximately $50,000 to the wedding planning company that organized his highly publicized nuptials to Chioma Rowland, calling the claims “crazy” in a terse social media response on Sunday evening.

The controversy erupted over the weekend when reports surfaced on social media alleging that Funke Bucknor-Obruthe, CEO of Zapphaire Events—the luxury event planning firm reportedly contracted to coordinate the couple’s lavish wedding ceremony—had publicly called out the award-winning artist over an outstanding debt.

The allegations, which quickly went viral across Nigerian social media platforms, were accompanied by what sources claimed were screenshots of private communications showing the event planner threatening to pursue legal action to recover the unpaid balance.

The wedding, which took place in June 2024, was one of the most talked-about celebrity events of the year, drawing A-list guests from Nigeria’s entertainment and business elite. Known for its opulence and extravagant displays of wealth, the ceremony was widely covered across African media outlets and social platforms.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday evening, the “Fall” hitmaker appeared visibly frustrated by the allegations, describing them as an affront. “This is just crazy atp (at this point),” Davido wrote in what appeared to be his only public comment on the matter thus far.

The terse response suggests the singer views the public call-out as particularly offensive, though he stopped short of directly denying the debt claim or providing details about any financial arrangements with the event planning company.

As of press time, neither Funke Bucknor-Obruthe nor representatives from Zapphaire Events have issued an official statement clarifying the allegations or confirming the purported debt. The authenticity of the leaked chat conversations also remains unverified.

The incident adds to a growing trend of celebrity-vendor disputes playing out in Nigeria’s public sphere, raising questions about payment practices within the country’s booming luxury events industry.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Afrobeats star Davido has publicly dismissed allegations that he owes his wedding planner $50,000, calling the claims “crazy” after reports surfaced that event CEO Funke Bucknor-Obruthe threatened legal action over the unpaid debt from his June 2024 wedding to Chioma.

While the singer expressed frustration at the public call-out, he has not directly confirmed or denied owing the money, and neither party has provided official statements or verified evidence. The incident highlights growing tensions around payment disputes in Nigeria’s luxury events industry.
