Rayan Cherki produced a moment of brilliance that set Manchester City on course for a 2–0 victory over Brentford on Wednesday, sealing their place in the League Cup semi-finals.
With the demanding festive Premier League run approaching, Pep Guardiola opted to rest key striker Erling Haaland, yet his side still delivered a composed and convincing performance.

Haaland was among seven players left out of the starting lineup at the Etihad Stadium as Guardiola rotated his squad. One of those given a rare opportunity was Uzbek defender Abdukodir Khusanov, who counted himself fortunate to escape with only a yellow card after bringing down Kevin Schade as the Brentford forward threatened to break through on goal.

City’s plans were slightly disrupted early on when Oscar Bobb was forced off injured after just 20 minutes, prompting Guardiola to introduce the in-form Phil Foden earlier than intended. Despite the setback, City gradually took control, and their breakthrough arrived in emphatic fashion shortly before half-time.

Cherki was the architect of the opener, collecting a partially cleared corner on the edge of the area, shifting the ball onto his right foot, and firing an unstoppable strike into the top corner to beat the helpless goalkeeper. The goal lifted the tempo and confidence of the home side.
The second goal came with an element of fortune in the latter stages, as Savinho’s effort took a deflection off Kristoffer Ajer, looping over goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson and into the net with 20 minutes remaining. That proved enough to put the contest beyond Brentford’s reach.

The victory marks City’s return to the League Cup last four for the first time in five seasons, having previously dominated the competition with four consecutive titles between 2018 and 2021. Elsewhere, Chelsea secured their semi-final berth with a 3–1 win at Cardiff on Tuesday, while Newcastle or Fulham were set to join them later on Wednesday. Arsenal will complete the quarter-final lineup when they face Crystal Palace next week.
