Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has made it clear he will step away from his role if the club fails to honour his preference for a leaner squad.
On Wednesday, he reiterated his stance, expressing discomfort with managing a large group of players, some of whom would be left without opportunities to play.
He said it would trouble him deeply to bring in talent only to have them sit unused. “I told the club I don’t want a big squad. I don’t want to put five, six players in the tribune, I don’t want that. I will quit,” he said. “If they don’t make a short squad, I will not stay. It’s impossible for my soul to put players in the tribune and not play.”
This declaration follows a difficult season for City, who recently suffered defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final, ensuring they’ll finish the campaign without lifting a major trophy.
Despite this setback, City improved their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League with a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth on Tuesday.
With the Premier League season nearing its end, City currently hold 68 points, ahead of Chelsea, Newcastle, and Aston Villa, who each have 66. Nottingham Forest trails just behind with 67 points.
A win against Fulham would confirm City’s third-place finish, though their strong goal difference means a draw might also be enough.
