The Niger State Government has issued a two-month ultimatum to residents of hamlets located around the Kainji Lake axis to vacate the area ahead of a planned resettlement, as part of renewed measures to flush out criminal elements operating within the zone.

Governor Umaru Bago made this known during a condolence visit to the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Muhammad Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, at the royal palace in New Bussa, following a recent terrorist attack in the Emirate.

Governor Umaru Bago speaking

The governor explained that the proposed resettlement exercise, which will be coordinated by the Borgu Emirate Council, has become necessary to reduce the risk of collateral damage as security operations intensify.

Bago said the decision was taken as the state government, working in collaboration with the Federal Government, steps up efforts to clear surrounding forests and dislodge criminal groups that have been using the Kainji Lake area as hideouts.

He expressed concern over the increasing influx of unprofiled individuals into the Emirate, describing the trend as a serious security threat, while also lamenting the activities of informants who, he said, have continued to sabotage ongoing security operations in the area.

The governor urged the Emirate Council to fully discharge its responsibilities by collaborating closely with security agencies and governments at all levels to address all forms of insecurity within the Emirate.

Bago also conveyed his condolences to the Emir and the people of Borgu Emirate, especially families who lost loved ones during the attack, offering prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased and strength for those they left behind.

In his remarks, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sabi Abdullahi, assured that the Federal Government remains committed to restoring peace and security nationwide and would support initiatives aimed at achieving lasting stability.

According to him, “It will be a welcome development if concrete actions are taken to relocate the affected communities, reclaim the forest, and deploy it for productive community use.”

Niger state residents

Responding, the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Muhammad Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, pledged the full cooperation of the Emirate with relevant authorities to identify and prosecute informants, stressing that the protection of lives and property remains paramount.

He commended Governor Bago for the condolence visit and reaffirmed the Emirate’s continued support for state government policies and programmes designed to improve the welfare and security of the people.

What you should know

The Kainji Lake axis in Niger State has increasingly become a security flashpoint, with criminal groups exploiting the vast forested terrain to launch attacks and evade security forces.

Government authorities believe that resettling scattered hamlets will reduce civilian exposure to violence and enable more effective military operations. While the move is aimed at restoring peace, it raises humanitarian concerns around displacement, resettlement planning and livelihoods.

Successful implementation will depend on transparent coordination with traditional institutions, adequate support for affected residents and sustained security presence in the reclaimed areas.
