Internationally renowned heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has been discharged from hospital and declared clinically fit to continue his recovery at home following his involvement in a fatal road accident in Ogun State.
This was disclosed in a statement jointly signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State, Gbenga Omotoso, and the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy in Ogun State, Kayode Akinmade.

According to the statement, Joshua was discharged on Wednesday but remains “heavy-hearted and full of emotions” over the tragic loss of two of his close friends.
The Lagos and Ogun State governments expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, who lost their lives in the accident involving the boxer on December 29, 2025. They prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls and strength for their families to bear the painful loss.
The statement revealed that Anthony Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their final respects to the departed friends as preparations were being made for their repatriation later that evening. Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State also appreciated the public for the outpouring of concern, love and support shown since the incident.

The governments further acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu throughout the process and commended the doctors and medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their professionalism and care in treating Joshua and others who sustained injuries.
The update followed a road crash that occurred around 11:00 a.m. on Monday in the Makun area of Ogun State along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Reports indicated that an SUV conveying Anthony Joshua collided with a stationary truck, leading to the death of his two friends.
A video from the scene showed the 35-year-old former heavyweight champion being rescued from the wreckage, visibly injured. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, later attributed the crash to overspeeding and wrongful overtaking.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief programme, the Ogun State Public Relations Officer of the FRSC, Afolabi Oyewole, said investigations revealed that the driver of the vehicle was travelling at a very high speed before attempting a wrongful overtaking manoeuvre that resulted in a collision with a truck parked on the extreme shoulder of the road.
He explained that the force of the impact made it impossible for all occupants to escape unhurt, adding that it was only fortunate that the point of impact was on the right-hand side of the vehicle. Oyewole confirmed that Anthony Joshua and the driver survived the crash and were immediately evacuated by Department of State Services (DSS) operatives attached to the boxer and taken to an undisclosed hospital.
