The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has officially declared three senatorial seats vacant following the deaths of some members of the 10th Senate.
The affected districts are Enugu North, Nasarawa North, and Rivers South-East. Akpabio announced the vacancies during a plenary session, stating that the move aligns with constitutional rules.
The declaration means the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must organize by-elections to fill the empty seats. INEC is expected to hold the elections within the timeframe set by law, which is around 30 days from the announcement.
Political parties in the affected states are now preparing for the upcoming contests as they seek to field candidates for the vacant Senate positions. The vacancies come amid the Senate’s ongoing legislative activities, signaling a period of political activity and realignment in these regions.
This development follows the unfortunate deaths of the senators representing these districts, creating openings that will soon be contested in fresh elections.
