Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has described his decision to represent Nigeria instead of England as a defining moment in his football journey, calling it “one of the most impactful decisions” of his life.
In an interview with ARISE TV, Lookman—the 2024 CAF African Footballer of the Year—spoke passionately about how the switch transformed both his personal and professional life.
“Without doubt, it changed my career and my life,” he said. “People know that. This is my home. This is my place. I enjoy it here. I am the son of the soil.”
Born in London, the 27-year-old represented England at youth level before pledging allegiance to Nigeria. Since then, his rise has been meteoric, with the pinnacle being a historic hat-trick in the Europa League final that handed Atalanta their first-ever European trophy.
Now hailed as one of Europe’s most in-form forwards, Lookman attributes his success to discipline and self-belief.
“When you work hard every single day, you gain confidence and grow in what you do. You know that eventually, your hard work will pay off,” he said.
Lookman also reflected on overcoming low moments, such as missing a crucial penalty during a loan spell at Fulham.
“Every day, I try to improve myself, both on and off the pitch. That consistency and mindset have really helped me,” he noted.
Winning the African Footballer of the Year award was, in his words, a “deeply personal moment.”
“It’s amazing. Honestly, I won’t lie to you, it’s a privilege to have it. I take it with real pride… to be among the biggest names in African football is a blessing.”
Returning to Lagos recently, Lookman presented his CAF award to President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, calling it a meaningful homecoming. Sanwo-Olu praised him as a symbol of “Greater Lagos Rising” and a role model for Nigerian youth.
He also visited Phase 2, a community where he spent his childhood with his grandmother and father.
“Bringing it back to Lagos means everything,” Lookman said. “That’s where I brought it back to, and today, I had the honour of presenting it to the President. That meant a lot.”
Asked about retirement, Lookman was quick to dismiss the idea.
“Definitely not. Retirement is nowhere in my thoughts. Not even close. There’s still a long journey ahead.”
Currently valued at €50 million, Lookman has attracted interest from major Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United. Atalanta, where he is a key figure, will look to retain or negotiate strongly for one of Europe’s most valuable forwards.
