Former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has urged the club not to miss the chance to capture Victor Osimhen, claiming the Nigerian forward could surpass the historic impact of Didier Drogba at Stamford Bridge.

Romelu Lukaku has been previously linked with Chelsea after it was reported they attempted to purchase the Nigerian striker last summer. However, financial agreements could not be reached. Currently, Osimhen is on loan at Turkish Süper Lig champions Galatasaray, where he has scored 27 goals and 5 assists in 32 matches this season.

While these changes may come with the season, Chelsea still seems to be on the hunt for a more experienced striker to partner with Senegalese talisman Nicolas Jackson. However, reports suggest that while Maresca’s team has ideas to reshape the squad in the upcoming transfer window, they are not setting their sights on the former Lille striker. Mikel pointed it out, claiming that it would be disappointing for his fellow countryman not to be signed, considering Osimhen supported the London club during his childhood.

During the Obione podcast, Mikel emphasized the need to target a lifelong Chelsea fan who would play for the club with pride: “It would be a huge loss if we don’t bring in a player who has been fantasizing about putting on this jersey since childhood.” Mikel, recalling that Osimhen worships Didier Drogba, surmised that the striker would want to surpass the accomplishments of the Chelsea icon: “His mission would be to break Drogba’s records, win trophies, and propel us back to the summit.”

As much as he appreciates Chelsea’s prerogatives, Mikel maintained that, should the club decide to pursue Osimhen, it would be difficult to understand why they would not act swiftly: “The contract could be done with one call. It is best for them to act quickly before this opportunity disappears.”
