Niger’s fragile military government faced its most serious internal challenge yet on Saturday, after a group of soldiers turned on their own commanders overnight, taking colleagues hostage and unleashing hours of gunfire and explosions across the capital, Niamey.
The unrest erupted in the pre-dawn hours at Base 101, a strategic barracks located within the perimeter of Diori Hamani International Airport.
According to a statement read on public television and signed by Defence Minister General Salifou Mody, a group of soldiers acting in breach of military regulations attempted to detain some of their comrades at the barracks and opened fire on several sensitive sites across the city.
The base is no ordinary garrison: it houses the headquarters of Niamey’s Russian Africa Corps partners as well as the command of the unified force of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), of which Niger is a member alongside Burkina Faso and Mali, making it one of the most sensitive military installations in the country.
Residents across the capital reported being jolted awake by sustained bursts of gunfire and explosions, with the violence concentrated in two areas in particular: the airport district and the Plateau administrative quarter, home to the presidential palace and other key state institutions.
Security forces and mutinous soldiers clashed at both the main airport housing Base 101 and near the presidential palace, in what officials later described as an apparent mutiny.
Security sources told AFP that “insurgents from within the armed forces” also attempted to force their way into the presidential palace but were repelled by the presidential guard.
By mid-morning, two security sources and a diplomat indicated the palace had been secured by loyalist troops, though the situation around the airport remained more contested, with some reports suggesting mutineers were still holding positions there even as the defence ministry declared progress in retaking the site.
State television and radio, a frequent flashpoint in coup attempts across the Sahel, went dark for just over an hour before broadcasts resumed at roughly 10:00 am local time (09:00 GMT).
Once back on air, the station carried the defence ministry’s statement, which struck a tone of reassurance: authorities urged the public to “remain calm and freely go about their business” and credited the swift response of security forces with helping to “contain this mutiny and gradually regain control of these sites.”
A separate post on the military’s official social media channels appealed for restraint, warning citizens to avoid sharing unverified information while the defence and security forces remained mobilized “for the defence of the homeland.”
The origins and full scale of the mutiny remain unclear. Earlier this year, jihadist affiliates linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group carried out separate attacks on the same airport and airbase complex, and that history initially fed speculation that militants might again be responsible.
Officials have since characterized Saturday’s violence as an internal mutiny rather than an external terrorist assault, a distinction with far greater political weight for a government already grappling with questions about the loyalty of its own ranks.
The unrest represents the latest and perhaps gravest test for General Abdourahamane Tiani, who seized power in the July 2023 coup that ousted elected President Mohamed Bazoum.
Tiani has staked his legitimacy in large part on a promise to restore security to the country, yet Niger, a Sahelian nation rich in uranium, oil, and gold, has continued to endure the jihadist violence that has destabilized the region for roughly a decade.
Saturday’s events suggest that instability may now be creeping inward, from the battlefield to the barracks of the capital itself.
As of Saturday afternoon, the government was projecting confidence that the mutiny had been contained, but with mutineers reportedly still present in parts of the airport complex, the true resolution of the crisis and what it might mean for the durability of the junta’s grip on power remained an open question.
