The Nigerian media community is in mourning following the sudden death of Dotun Oladipo, the veteran journalist and founder of The Eagle Online, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 56.

According to a report by The Eagle Online, the publication he built into one of Nigeria’s notable digital news platforms, Mr. Oladipo fell suddenly ill at his office in Lagos on Tuesday, 25 August. The exact circumstances of his death remained unclear as of Wednesday, with details still emerging.

News of his death was confirmed by the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), an industry body Mr. Oladipo himself once led as president. In a statement posted to the guild’s platform on Tuesday night and reported by The Cable, GOCOP’s current president, Danlami Nmodu, broke the news to members.

“It has just been confirmed that Emeritus President Mr. Dotun Oladipo died today. May his soul rest in peace. Amen,” Mr. Nmodu wrote, a brief message that quickly rippled across Nigeria’s tightly knit online publishing circles.

Mr. Oladipo’s death closes the chapter on a career spanning almost three decades, one that tracked the broader transformation of Nigerian journalism from ink and print to servers and smartphones.

He cut his teeth at some of the country’s most established newspapers, passing through the newsrooms of the Nigerian Tribune, the Nigerian Compass, The Sun, and PUNCH Newspapers.

It was at PUNCH that he arguably made his most visible mark in traditional media, rising to the position of Politics Editor, a role that put him at the heart of the paper’s coverage of Nigeria’s often turbulent political landscape. His tenure in that seat was recently referenced in a retrospective published by PUNCH itself.

But it was in the digital space that Mr Oladipo would build his most enduring legacy. He went on to found The Eagle Online, serving as its publisher and managing editor, and later became chief executive officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, the company behind the platform.

Colleagues and his own professional profile described him as an investigative journalist at heart, with a persistent appetite for deep analysis and thorough reporting rather than surface-level coverage.

Beyond his own newsroom, Mr Oladipo was known as an institution-builder within the industry. He served as a former president of GOCOP, the body representing corporate online publishers in Nigeria, before handing the mantle to Mr. Nmodu.

He was also the pioneer president of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society (IMPCMS), a group formed to foster collaboration and professional growth among media practitioners, an effort that spoke to his interest in strengthening the profession beyond his own outlet.

In a detail that has struck many as particularly poignant, The Eagle Online continued publishing right up until word of its founder’s death emerged.

On Tuesday, the platform carried fresh stories on politics, business, crime, and sports the ordinary rhythm of a newsroom going about its work, unaware that its publisher would not see the day out.

As tributes continue to filter in from across Nigeria’s media industry, further details about the circumstances of Mr. Oladipo’s death, as well as funeral arrangements, are expected to be announced in the coming days.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Dotun Oladipo, 56, founder of The Eagle Online and a veteran of Nigerian journalism spanning nearly three decades from PUNCH’s Politics Editor desk to pioneering digital publishing, died suddenly on 25 August after falling ill at his Lagos office.

Beyond the outlet he built, he shaped the industry itself as a former GOCOP president and founder of IMPCMS. His death marks the loss of one of Nigeria’s early digital journalism pioneers, gone at the height of active work; his newsroom was still publishing the very day he died.
