The Enugu State Government has suspended the traditional ruler of Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community in Enugu South Local Government Area, Igwe Christopher Nyia, following allegations of misconduct and a dispute that has affected peace in the area.

The suspension was carried out on Tuesday, July 28, after officials from the state Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs delivered the letter to the monarch on the instruction of Governor Peter Mbah.

The state Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr Charles Egumgbe, said the decision was taken to restore peace and maintain order in the community.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Emeka Nebeife.

The government said the community had been facing internal crisis after residents raised allegations of misconduct against the traditional ruler.

It added that the situation had led to tension and a breakdown of order within the area.

Following the suspension, the state government set up an administrative panel to investigate the cause of the crisis and determine the roles played by the traditional ruler and other individuals connected to the situation.

The panel is expected to identify those involved in the dispute and provide findings that will guide the government on the next steps.

The committee has been given two weeks to complete its investigation and submit its report.

The latest action comes shortly after the state government suspended three traditional rulers and four community leaders in parts of Ezeagu Local Government Area over issues linked to security and alleged misconduct.
