President announces resignation
The president of Bangladesh, Mohammed Shahabuddin, has officially stepped down from his position, pointing to his failing physical and mental well-being as the main reason for his decision.
He formally delivered his letter of resignation to the speaker of parliament, explaining that his worsening condition had made it impossible for him to continue carrying out his duties in the high-ranking office.
The seventy-six-year-old leader, who is also known by the nickname Chuppu, was chosen for the post by parliament in 2023 with strong backing from former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her political party, the Awami League.
Although the presidency in Bangladesh is mostly a ceremonial role, his close connection to the former prime minister made his position increasingly difficult over time.
When widespread student protests forced Hasina out of power in 2024, many citizens and political groups began calling for the president to leave office as well.
Public pressure grew further after claims surfaced that he had held a telephone conversation with Hasina while receiving medical treatment in London, though he firmly denied those reports.
Before the resignation became public, the government noted that any departure would need to follow the proper constitutional path by submitting a formal letter to the parliamentary speaker.
Shahabuddin later confirmed directly that he had indeed stepped down, choosing to leave his post well ahead of when his term was originally scheduled to end in 2028.
