The Senate has suspended its ongoing recess and summoned lawmakers to an emergency sitting scheduled for June 23 to deliberate on urgent national issues, particularly the country’s worsening security situation.

The special session is expected to commence at 11 a.m. in the Senate chamber.

A notice announcing the emergency meeting was issued on June 15 by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo.

According to the notice, the session was convened on the directive of Senate President Godswill Akpabio to enable lawmakers address pressing matters requiring immediate legislative attention.

The Senate said the decision to reconvene before the end of the recess became necessary due to growing concerns over national security and other important issues affecting the country.

The development means senators will return earlier than initially planned.

The upper legislative chamber had adjourned plenary on June 11 and was expected to resume normal legislative activities on July 7.

The emergency sitting comes amid increasing security challenges in several parts of the country, with reports of attacks, kidnappings and other violent incidents continuing to generate concern among Nigerians.

The Senate’s action follows a similar move by the House of Representatives.

Members of the House on Monday also held an emergency sitting to consider amendments to the 2025 Appropriation Act.

During the session, lawmakers deliberated on a proposal seeking an extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 budget.

The proposal aims to move the deadline from June 30 to September 30 in order to provide additional time for the execution of capital projects across the country.
