Nigerian music superstar Davido has entered the Osun State political fray, publicly attacking Federal Minister Gboyega Oyetola and accusing the former governor of orchestrating a desperate political plot ahead of the governorship election.
In a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, in the early hours of Tuesday, the Timeless singer minced no words as he aimed at Oyetola, describing him as “the most desperate politician in the world” and warning that whatever scheme he is alleged to be orchestrating was destined to fail.
“The most desperate politician in the world is @GboyegaOyetola; very embarrassing. “Oyetola, your plan no go work,” Davido wrote, in a message that has since gone viral across Nigerian social media, igniting fierce debate among political observers, fans, and everyday Nigerians alike.
While the Grammy-nominated artist stopped short of spelling out the precise nature of the alleged plan, the timing of his outburst is anything but coincidental. Osun State is currently simmering with political tension as all eyes turn toward the governorship election slated for August 15, 2026, a contest widely regarded as one of the most consequential in the South-West political calendar this year.
Oyetola, who governed Osun State between 2018 and 2022 before losing a keenly contested rerun election to the Peoples Democratic Party’s Senator Ademola Adeleke, Davido’s own uncle, has remained a formidable and deeply polarizing figure in the state’s political landscape. His current role as minister in President Bola Tinubu’s administration has done little to dim his influence or his ambitions in the state he once helmed.
Davido’s intervention is particularly charged given his family ties to incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, whose administration is widely expected to seek re-election in August.
The singer has never hidden his strong support for his uncle and has, in the past, leveraged his enormous social media following numbering in the tens of millions to weigh in on issues close to his heart.
Political analysts suggest that Davido’s tweet, whether strategically calculated or emotionally driven, carries significant weight in a state where youth voter turnout and social media influence are increasingly decisive political forces.
“Davido is not just a celebrity here; he is a political symbol in Osun,” one Osogbo-based political analyst told this reporter. “When he speaks on Osun politics, people listen, especially the young voters who could make or break this election.”
As of the time of filing this report, neither Minister Oyetola nor his media aides had issued any formal response to Davido’s public callout.
However, sources close to the All Progressives Congress (APC) structure in Osun State, speaking on condition of anonymity, dismissed the singer’s post as “the emotional outburst of a partisan entertainer who should stick to music,” insisting that the party remains focused on reclaiming the governorship through democratic means.
With less than three months to the August 15 governorship poll, Osun State finds itself at the center of one of Nigeria’s most fiercely watched political contests.
The APC, smarting from its 2022 loss, is widely expected to mount an aggressive campaign, while the PDP, under the incumbent administration of Governor Adeleke, will be pulling every lever available to retain power.
Whether Davido’s broadside against Oyetola signals a deeper, more organized political mobilization effort from the Adeleke camp or whether it was simply the unfiltered frustration of a concerned family member remains to be seen.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Davido’s public callout of Minister Gboyega Oyetola over an undisclosed political scheme underscores just how deeply personal and fiercely contested the battle for Osun State has become.
With the governorship election drawing closer on August 15, 2026, the involvement of one of Africa’s biggest music stars, who also happens to be the incumbent governor’s nephew, signals that the stakes in this election extend well beyond the ballot box.
Whatever Oyetola’s alleged plan may be, one thing is clear: in Osun State, politics is a family business, and no one is staying on the sidelines.
