Inter Milan Beat Lazio To Clinch Italian Cup

Inter Milan secured the Italian Cup on Wednesday after defeating Lazio 2-0 to complete a domestic double alongside their 21st Serie A title.

An own goal from Adam Marusic and a close-range finish by Lautaro Martinez, both in the first half, handed Inter a comfortable victory at Stadio Olimpico and sealed the club’s 10th Italian Cup triumph.

Speaking after the win, Inter coach Cristian Chivu praised his side’s performances throughout the campaign.

“We deserved the trophies after a good season.”

“Winning the league and cup is never something you can take for granted. We’re very happy,” he told Mediaset.

The victory capped a remarkable domestic season for Inter, who combined attacking efficiency with defensive solidity to dominate both competitions.

For Lazio, however, the defeat added to an increasingly frustrating season marked by fan unrest and underwhelming performances.

The club’s hardcore supporters have spent much of the campaign boycotting home matches in protest against long-time owner Claudio Lotito.

Although many returned for the final and generated strong support throughout the match, frustration boiled over late in the game as chants against Lotito rang around the stadium.

Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri admitted his side had simply been outclassed.

“I’m disappointed for the boys, because morale is low at the moment, and for the fans who came back tonight, who came back in numbers tonight.”

“Tonight we just came up against a better team than us,” he said.

Inter seized control early when a poorly timed header from Marcus Thuram from a corner taken by Federico Dimarco deflected into the net off Marusic in the 14th minute.

The Nerazzurri doubled their lead 20 minutes later after a costly error from Nuno Tavares near the edge of Lazio’s penalty area.

Denzel Dumfries pounced on the loose ball and squared it for Martinez, who calmly tapped home his 22nd goal in all competitions this season.

The Argentine striker, who has endured an injury-hit campaign, made no mistake with the opportunity.

The second half was largely uneventful as Inter comfortably controlled proceedings.

Luis Henrique missed a golden opportunity to make it 3-0 when he fired wide from close range after meeting Dimarco’s low cross.

Shortly after, Boulaye Dia summed up Lazio’s struggles when he stumbled awkwardly and directed an effort onto the head of Inter goalkeeper Josep Martinez.

From that point, Inter calmly saw out the remaining minutes before celebrating another major trophy.

The triumph further cements Inter’s status as Italy’s dominant force this season.
