Shock As Ambassador-Designate To Algeria Dies

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria has confirmed the death of Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to the Algeria, Mohammed Lele, who passed away in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye, following a prolonged illness.

Until his passing, Lele served as Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he played a key role in shaping Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements within the region.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the late diplomat was described as a committed and exemplary public servant who “served the nation with steadfast loyalty and distinction.”

The ministry highlighted his distinguished career, noting that he was widely respected for his intellectual depth, strategic thinking, and unwavering dedication to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy interests.

“Therefore, his sudden demise is a monumental loss not only to his immediate family but also to the entire Foreign Service community and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement read.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, was present alongside senior officials at the International Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja to receive the remains of the late diplomat upon arrival from Istanbul, Türkiye. He described Lele as a diligent, humble, and exceptional officer whose contributions will be deeply missed.

Born in Gamawa, located in Bauchi State, in 1976, Lele studied Economics at Bayero University Kano before joining Nigeria’s foreign service in 2001.

Throughout his career, he served in several Nigerian diplomatic missions, including postings in Germany, Togo, and Saudi Arabia. His recent nomination as ambassador-designate to Algeria followed approval by the Nigerian Senate under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Lele was laid to rest on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, in Kano, Kano State, in accordance with Islamic burial rites.

The Ministry extended its condolences to his family, colleagues, and the people of Bauchi State, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for those affected by his passing.
