Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is reportedly planning to resign from the cabinet of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Sources who spoke with TheCable disclosed that Tuggar is considering stepping down in order to pursue the governorship of Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 elections.

The expected move follows a directive issued by President Tinubu instructing all political appointees who intend to contest elective positions in the 2027 elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive was announced by Dewan Goshit, the Head of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), in a statement released on Tuesday.

Tuggar’s planned resignation is coming shortly after the conclusion of the 2026 national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where most members of the party’s National Working Committee were returned unopposed.

Following the convention, attention has shifted to cabinet members believed to have political ambitions but who are yet to formally declare their intentions.

Supporters of the minister from Bauchi State, who were part of the delegation to the convention, said a formal declaration of his governorship ambition is expected soon, noting that political support for his possible candidacy is growing.

Tuggar previously served as a member of the House of Representatives, representing the Gamawa Federal Constituency from 2007 to 2011.

He also served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany between 2017 and 2023 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, before he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2023.
