A deadly attack has struck Aso A, a community near Jumai Estate in Mararaba, a border area between Abuja and Nasarawa State, leaving multiple people dead and several others injured.

According to reports gathered by Verily News, the violence, which began on Wednesday morning, has claimed at least five lives, although the exact number of casualties remains unclear.

Mararaba herdsmen attack

An eyewitness, who spoke via phone, said the crisis was sparked by an earlier confrontation between a farmer and a herder, which reportedly resulted in the death of the herder. The farmer involved in the incident was said to have fled shortly after.

In what appears to be a retaliatory attack, suspected herdsmen reportedly stormed the residence of the fleeing farmer, attacking residents indiscriminately and setting several houses on fire. The situation worsened when members of the community attempted to defend themselves, leading to further destruction and loss of life.

A video obtained from the scene showed homes engulfed in flames, while the body of one victim was seen being transported in a wheelbarrow to a nearby hospital.

Residents say the community has now been largely abandoned, as many fled to safer areas in Abuja and surrounding locations.

Security forces, including police and military personnel, have since been deployed to restore order in the affected area.

In a related development, a motorcyclist conveying a police officer to the scene was reportedly ambushed and killed by the attackers.

Although authorities are yet to confirm the exact number of fatalities, a community leader disclosed that tension remains high in Mararaba, amid fears that more armed herdsmen may be mobilising from Keffi for possible reprisal attacks.

What you should know

The attack in Aso A community highlights ongoing tensions between farmers and herders in parts of Nigeria, often triggered by disputes over land and resources.

These clashes frequently escalate into violent reprisals, leading to loss of lives and displacement of residents. The latest incident has forced many people to flee their homes, while security forces work to restore order.

Concerns remain over potential further attacks, underscoring the need for long-term solutions to recurring communal conflicts in the region.
