Governor Seyi Makinde has firmly dismissed speculations about a possible defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, insisting that he remains committed to the party despite recent political developments.
Makinde made this known while addressing PDP stakeholders from all 33 Local Government Areas at the Local Government House Secretariat in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Monday.
His clarification follows recent political movements that sparked rumours, including a meeting involving Makinde, Peter Obi, and Seriake Dickson with the national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, in Kano State.
Addressing concerns, Makinde reassured party members of the PDP’s strength and future, stating that the party would remain active and competitive ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Those saying PDP will die are mistaken. What is certain is that PDP will be on the ballot in 2027, and we will produce candidates for all elective positions from the state to the national level. We will remain in PDP and win,” he said.
The governor emphasised the importance of unity within the party, urging stakeholders to resolve internal differences and adopt consensus-driven strategies in preparation for upcoming elections.

“They want to take Oyo State at all costs, but it is our responsibility to ensure we bend our rules where necessary to accommodate one another,” he added.
As part of his political strategy, Makinde announced automatic tickets for National Assembly members and first-term members of the state House of Assembly.
He explained that first-term lawmakers would be granted automatic tickets, while returning members would be considered based on existing agreements, including rotational arrangements.
“There are places where individuals have chosen not to return, and in some cases, second-term lawmakers may seek a third term. We are preparing for a tough electoral contest, but we are confident of victory.
“This battle is not just about 2027; it is about the future of democracy and future generations. Nothing good comes easy. Success is achieved through struggle. Can we fight through this? Yes. Can we win? Absolutely,” he said.
At a separate high-level stakeholders’ meeting held at the state secretariat, Makinde again reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, assuring party leaders and members that all aspirants for the 2027 elections would contest under the party’s platform.
He further disclosed that the PDP would adopt a consensus-based approach in selecting candidates, stressing that unity and internal cohesion remain critical to maintaining the party’s dominance in Oyo State.
What you should know
Makinde’s strong denial of defection rumours comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
His stance reinforces PDP’s hold in Oyo State while addressing concerns raised by recent meetings with opposition figures. By promoting unity, consensus candidate selection, and automatic tickets for lawmakers, the governor aims to stabilise the party internally and position it for electoral success.
The development highlights increasing political manoeuvring as major players begin to shape alliances and strategies for the next general elections.
