Suspected bandits have destroyed a major bridge linking communities in Niger State, leaving residents stranded and disrupting economic activities in the area.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday in Borgu Local Government Area, where the bridge connecting Wawa and Luma communities was bombed using explosive devices, cutting off the only access route between the towns.

The destruction has also affected the popular Babanna border market, forcing traders and buyers to suspend activities due to the lack of access.

A local source described the situation as devastating, noting that the bridge is a crucial link for movement, trade, and social interaction among surrounding communities.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, said the attack was carried out by suspected terrorists.

A Collapsed Bridge in Niger State

“On 23rd March 2026, at about 6:30 a.m., a report was received indicating that at about 2:00 a.m. of the same date, suspected terrorists within the park forest used explosive devices to bomb a bridge located along Luma road in Borgu LGA, connecting Luma–Babanna–Agwara communities,” he said.

Abiodun explained that the attack appears to be an attempt to disrupt ongoing security operations in the region.

He assured residents that security agencies have intensified clearance operations, with continuous monitoring underway to restore safety and normalcy.

Residents have called on both the federal and state governments to urgently reconstruct the bridge, warning that prolonged disruption could cripple local commerce and worsen hardship.

In recent months, Niger State has recorded a rise in violent attacks by armed groups targeting communities and key infrastructure, further heightening insecurity and fear among residents.

What you should know

The bombing of the bridge in Niger State highlights a growing tactic by armed groups to target critical infrastructure, disrupting both security operations and local economies.

By destroying key access routes, attackers can isolate communities and hinder response efforts. The incident has also impacted cross-border trade, particularly the Babanna market, which is vital to local livelihoods.

Authorities say operations are ongoing, but residents are calling for urgent reconstruction and stronger protection to prevent further attacks.
