President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in Lagos early Friday following the conclusion of his two-day historic visit to the United Kingdom.

The President is expected to join Muslim faithful later in the day to mark the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.

Tinubu, alongside the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, touched down at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 1:15 am.

He was received on arrival by key government officials, including Femi Hamzat, Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, alongside members of the All Progressives Congress.

As part of his Eid programme, the President is scheduled to observe prayers at the Eid ground located at Dodan Barracks.

In his Sallah message, Tinubu urged Muslims across the country to remain committed to the lessons of Ramadan, particularly values such as piety, empathy, and unity.

“We have a lot to draw from the noble lessons of Ramadan, especially at a time like this. We must continue to abide by the virtues of piety, selflessness, perseverance, kindness and compassion beyond this period,” he said.

Before departing London, the President met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street, where both countries agreed on a £746 million deal to refurbish two major ports in Lagos.

Tinubu described the visit—his first state visit to the UK and the first by a Nigerian leader in 37 years—as “very thrilling and significant” in strengthening bilateral relations.

“We can not forget the institutional development we have enjoyed over the years,” he said during discussions in London, noting that talks covered trade, the economy, climate change, terrorism, and broader global issues.

The President and his wife were also hosted by Charles III and Camilla at Windsor Castle, where a state banquet was held in their honour.

“Our two nations share a vision of progress and resilience. Today, we continue that journey, committed to building a future rooted in partnership, mutual respect, and common values.’’

Earlier, the monarch formally received the President and the First Lady at Windsor Castle, where Tinubu inspected a guard of honour and was welcomed with a ceremonial 42-gun salute.

What you should know

President Tinubu’s UK visit marks a significant diplomatic milestone, being the first state visit by a Nigerian leader in nearly four decades.

The trip focused on strengthening economic and political ties, including agreements on infrastructure such as port development in Lagos. His return coincides with Eid al-Fitr celebrations, highlighting both diplomatic engagement and domestic religious observance.

The visit also underscores Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to attract foreign investment and deepen international partnerships.
