The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party has dissolved the caretaker committee led by Esther Nenadi Usman after conducting an internal review of the party’s affairs.
The decision was taken during a virtual NEC meeting held on March 17, 2026, where members assessed the activities of the committee and its impact on the party.
The resolutions of the meeting were confirmed in a statement signed by Abdulrahim Imam Chindo, the secretary of the NEC forum.
According to the council, which is made up of elected state chairmen and their secretaries, the actions of the caretaker committee had negatively affected the party since it began operating.
During the same meeting, the council reaffirmed its support for the National Working Committee led by Julius Abure, confirming him as the recognised national chairman of the party.
The leadership under Abure was earlier produced at the party’s national convention in March 2024 and was later affirmed at another NEC meeting held in November 2025 under the supervision of the electoral body.
The council also directed Abure to begin preparations for the party’s primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He was asked to notify the Independent National Electoral Commission once the legal issues affecting the party are resolved, in line with the official timetable.
In addition, the NEC instructed Abure and the party’s national secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, to continue pursuing an appeal at the Court of Appeal.
The appeal seeks to overturn a judgment delivered in January 2026 by a Federal High Court.
The council further declared that all earlier notices sent to the electoral commission by the Nenadi-led caretaker committee are no longer valid.
The meeting was convened following earlier calls for both virtual and physical sessions to address the crisis within the party.
