President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the official postings of 65 ambassadors to represent Nigeria across several countries and at the United Nations.

The appointments include 31 career diplomats and 34 non-career ambassadors who will head Nigerian missions abroad.

The envoys had earlier been confirmed by the Nigerian Senate in December 2025 following their nomination by the president.

According to a statement released by the presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, several notable political figures are among the non-career ambassadors assigned to foreign missions.

Those who received postings include former presidential aide Reno Omokri, who has been posted to Mexico, and former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode, who will serve as ambassador to Germany.

Ambassadorial Appointment List

Also appointed is former senator Ita Enang, who will represent Nigeria in South Africa, while the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, has been assigned to serve as ambassador to Qatar.

The statement confirmed that the appointments form part of the administration’s effort to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic representation across strategic global locations.

What you should know

Ambassadors serve as the highest-ranking diplomatic representatives of a country in foreign nations or international organisations.

Nigeria typically appoints both career diplomats from the foreign service and non-career political appointees to head its missions abroad. Career ambassadors usually come from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with extensive diplomatic experience, while non-career ambassadors are often politicians, technocrats, or public figures trusted by the government.

Their responsibilities include strengthening bilateral relations, promoting trade and investment, protecting Nigerian citizens abroad, and representing Nigeria’s interests in international affairs.
